I had been working with a personal trainer for some time, thinking he could help me manage my weight issues. Even he noticed how hard I worked without results. He had previously read an article by a functional medicine practitioner and suggested I see her.
I had no idea who she was. She was expensive. I about fell over when she told me how much six months of her treatment program was going to cost me. And she only accepted cash, check or charge, no insurance. I was definitely skeptical, but I felt so awful about myself and I had tried everything else, so I figured why not give it a shot. I couldn’t get any worse, right?
My main goal was weight loss. I didn’t even care about how I felt as long as I could be skinny and hot again. I was 36 or 37 at the time and I was over it! She ran some tests and, had she been less professional, she could have laughed in my face. The results on my labs showed weight loss was apparently the least of my problems.
My functional medicine practitioner discovered I was gluten intolerant, had many parasites as well as leaky gut syndrome, and I was in a severe state of HPA-D (formerly adrenal fatigue). I also had antibodies towards my myelin sheath—basically, my nervous system was under attack and, if this continued, I could eventually develop Multiple Sclerosis or ALS.
“My body was attacking itself and I had no idea how bad things were. My functional medicine practitioner showed me it was time to get serious about my health.”
I was completely out of whack. We changed my daily diet to a paleo diet specific to those suffering from autoimmune diseases, and then took it a step further to be specific to my personal needs. She recommended that I reduce the amount of exercise I was doing—significantly reduce it. I also added supplements to my routine in order to address the HPA-D, leaky gut syndrome, and parasites. And I added acupuncture.
After two to four months on this new lifestyle plan, I started to feel better.
I had more energy. My hair came back. I lost 23 lbs effortlessly and felt less bloated. I was more centered, more in control. My mood improved significantly and I wasn’t as angry at the world for every small, little thing. Everything began to balance out.
During this healing process, my functional medicine practitioner recommended I consider a career in functional medicine because she thought I would be good at it. So I did, and I am!
“Because I experienced healing and felt that joy of a balanced life again, it became my mission to help others take back their health, just like I did.”
I know what you’re going through. I’ve been there. Hurting and hopeless. Frustrated.
From my professional background in nutrition, my functional medicine training, my understanding of the medical field, and my personal experience of being out of sync with my own body, I know I can help you. I have developed programs to help many others heal and live balanced.
